Holding the room

Two colleagues enjoying a conversation in a modern office setting with a cityscape view.

Whether you are chatting with a client, giving a presentation, or trying to make a sale, there is one golden rule that will always make you better: S.E.E the K.I.S.S. It sounds simple and it is but it can completely change how people respond to you.

Let’s break it down.

S.E.E – Smile, Eye Contact, Emotion

Smile – Always smile. A genuine smile instantly makes you more approachable, friendly, and confident. It sets the tone for trust and connection before a single word is spoken.

Eye Contact – Look people in the eye. It shows honesty and attention. A good rule is to hold eye contact just long enough to show you are engaged, then glance away naturally. Add small pauses or “strategic breaks” to keep their attention and give your words more weight.

Emotion – Match their energy, then lift it slightly. Aim to be about ten percent more emotive than the person or group you are speaking to. If someone is calm and thoughtful, be relaxed but a touch more animated. If they are lively and full of energy, meet it then raise it slightly. You are guiding the mood of the conversation, not overpowering it.

Now for the second half.

K.I.S.S – Keep It Short and Simple

No one ever complained that a message was too easy to understand. The best communicators make complex ideas sound effortless. Get to the point, use clear language, and avoid over explaining.

And remember the opposite rule don’t K.I.L.L your message. That means don’t keep it lengthy with language. Rambling loses attention fast, no matter how strong your ideas are.

When you combine S.E.E and K.I.S.S, you connect, engage, and leave a lasting impression. Smile, keep eye contact, show a bit more emotion, and say what you mean simply.

That’s how great communicators do it they S.E.E the K.I.S.S.
